Pirates pick up a trio of wins at Cal Lutheran tournament

THOUSAND OAKS -- It was a very successful weekend for the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team as the Pirates picked up three wins up at the Cal Lutheran Men's Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

In the opening match, Coast took on Moorpark and rolled to a 25-19, 25-22, 25-16 win over the Raiders. Kyle McCauley led the way with 11 kills, while Will Donald added eight kills and Wyatt Henson came through with seven kills.

The setter tandem of Colby Elder and Jacob Gilliam combined for 28 assists, while libero Cole Aidnik notched eight digs.

On Saturday, Coast returned to the court and swept past UC Santa Cruz. Wyatt Rowland led the offense with 10 kills, while Zane Moothard added seven kills. Up the middle, the blockers of Jake Loudenback and GK Kailiwai combined for nine kills on just 15 attempts.

Elder dished out 15 assists, while Gilliam added 12. Libero Braden Newmann anchored the defense with 14 digs, while teammate Jack Flynn added 10.

In the tourney finale, Coast rolled to a 25-19, 25-15, 25-18 win over El Camino to improve to 4-1 for the season. Six different players had at lead three kills for the Pirate offense, led by McCauley, who had eight and Henson, who had seven.

Gilliam led the setters with 13 assists, while Elder contributed nine and on defense, Aidnik notched six digs.

Coast will return to the friendly confines of the Peterson Gym on Friday night against L.A. Pierce College, beginning at 6 p.m.
