Pirates keep Jets grounded in three-set sweep

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball bounced back from last week's loss to Long Beach and rolled past visiting Miramar College in three sets on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Kyle McCauley had seven kills to lead the Pirates (6-2) past the Jets (1-5), 25-18, 25-18, 25-20, in a nonconference matchup. Zane Moothart and Wyatt Henson each contributed to the OCC offense with six kills apiece.

For the Jets, Kekoa Pukahi had 11 kills, while Nik Gettman added seven.

Both of the first two sets went back and forth before OCC pulled away each time. In the opener, a Pukahi kill and ace helped pull the Jets even with the Pirates at 14 before Coast ripped off 10 of the next 12 points to grab the lead for good. Will Donald had a pair of solo blocks and a kill during that span and helped OCC grab a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, again, the match was tied at 14 after seven different lead changes. But, a pair of big kills by Henson helped spark a 7-1 run, giving Coast a 21-15 advantage. Miramar would get as close as 22-18 before three unforced errors by the Jets gave Coast a two-set lead in the match.

There would be no late run required in the third set as the Pirates jumped out to an 11-6 lead and never looked back.

The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. to host San Diego Mesa.
