Pirates make quick work of Olympians

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball team needed less than an hour to take of business, sweeping past San Diego Mesa on Friday afternoon inside the Peterson Gym.

Clark Steele and Jack Flynn each had six kills to lead the Pirates (7-2) past the Olympians (1-6), 25-13, 25-11, 25-17, in a nonconference matchup.

Raymond Hart and William Theye each had five kills for the Olympians, while Cody Cox added four.

Mesa managed to get the opening point on all three matches, only to see the Pirates roll from there. In the opener, Coast used a pair of kills by Will Donald to spark a 9-2 run, giving the Pirates the lead for good.

Coast used a 14-5 run to start the second set to help give the Pirates a two-set lead. GK Kailiwai came up big in the second set with two kills and two solo blocks over that span.

In the third, the Pirates just had too much firepower as the Flynn and Jake Loudenback helped lead the hosts to an easy third-set win.

The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Grossmont College, beginning at 6 p.m.
