Pirates sweep past the Griffins

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball team continued its strong play through the nonconference portion of its schedule with a three-set sweep over visiting Grossmont on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

It was a total team effort for the Pirates (9-2) as several players provided plenty of support against the shorthanded Griffins (2-8). Wyatt Henson led OCC with 12 kills, while Clark Steele added eight kills to go along with four block assists.

Kyle McCauley made the most of his time with six kills, while in the middle, Will Donald added five kills and five block assists.

For the Griffins, Trevor Detteh led their offense with 12 kills.

After a slow start that saw Coast fall behind 5-2, an 8-2 run put the Pirates ahead for good in the opening set. A pair of kills by Henson and solo slams by Donald, McCauley and Bradley Hankus helped spark the Pirate outburst.

Grossmont hung tough and stayed within three at 21-18 before kills by Donald and Henson started a set-ending 4-2 finish, giving the Pirates the opening set.

The back-and-forth drama was noticeably absent in the second set as OCC jumped ahead early and scored 18 of the first 23 points, breezing to a two-set lead in the match. Three kills by McCauley got things started, while Steele closed out the run with a pair of kills of his own.

The third set resembled more of the first set with both teams going back and forth. Finally, with OCC up 20-18, the Pirate blockers took over as Steele and Hankus used a pair of dual blocks, while Steele, Henson and Zane Moothart slugged down solo slams to end the match for the Pirates.

Coast will return to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday against Santa Barbara City College, beginning at 6 p.m.
