Pirates top Chaffey before falling to Santa Ana

COSTA MESA -- It was an up-and-down week for the Orange Coast College softball team, courtesy of a 13-7 win at Chaffey College on Monday, followed by a 24-6 loss to visiting Santa Ana on Wednesday.

In the win over the Panthers, Coast (2-3) rode the power train and slugged three 3-run home runs on the way to victory.

Kristin Nance went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI, including one of the three aforementioned three-run home runs. The other two came from Briana Magdaleno (3-for-4, two runs, four RBI) and Kellie Tiner (4-for-5, one run, four RBI).

Kenna Barth also contributed to OCC's 16-hit attach with a hit and four runs scored, while Ariana Lopez contributed two hits and two runs.

That would be plenty of offense for Tiner, who went the distance to pick up the win, collecting seven strikeouts along the way.

In Wednesday's Orange Empire Conference opener against the Dons, Coast again used the long ball and slugged three more home runs from Nance, Magdaleno and Katie Kendrick, but the SAC bats came to life in a big way down the stretch and ran away with the six-inning win.

Nance finished with three hits and three runs scored. Kendrick went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI and Magdaleno added two hits, one run and two RBI.

Coast will return to the OCC Softball Complex on Wednesday against Golden West, beginning at 3 p.m.
