Pirates fight hard, but fall to Chargers, 6-2

CYPRESS -- The Orange Coast College softball team put forth a strong effort, but came up short to host Cypress College, 6-2, on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

The Chargers (6-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings before the Pirates (3-4) came back to make things interesting in the top of the fourth.

In that inning, Kristin Nance and Briana Magdaleno each singled to start things off. Mariah Dominguez moved over both runners with a sacrifice bunt before Kellie Tiner brought in Nance with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

Kenna Barth made 3-2 when her grounder to first was misplayed into an error, scoring Magdaleno.

But Cypress came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and added another run in the fifth to close things out.

Hannah Cavalier went 2-for-4 for the Pirates, while single hits were turned in by Nance, Magdaleno and Tiner.

The Pirates return to action on Wednesday at Riverside City College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home game will be on Friday against Fullerton, beginning at 2 p.m.
