Pirates double-up Compton for 6-3 win

COSTA MESA -- Hannah Cavalier and Briana Magdaleno each had two RBI and Kellie Tiner pitched a complete game to lead the Orange Coast College softball team to a 6-3 win over El Camino-Compton Center on Monday at the OCC Softball Complex.

The win snaps a six-game losing streak for the Pirates (7-18), while the loss drops the Tartars to 16-15 overall.

OCC jumped ahead early, scoring a pair of runs in the first and second innings to take control of the game.

Cavalier doubled and went to third on a single by Kristin Nance. Two batters later, Magdaleno drove in both runners with a two-run double to right-center.

In the bottom of the second, Breanna Thompson, who went 3-for-3, singled, stole second, went to third when Cassidy Morrow reached on a dropped third strike/wild pitch. Morrow stole second and the two of the them would score when an RBI-grounder by Cavalier was misplayed, putting Coast up 4-0.

The Tartars scored in the top of the third, but Coast answered right back when Mariah Dominguez doubled to right-center and scored on an RBI-single by Thompson, putting the Pirates up, 5-1.

Compton made it 5-3 in the top of the fifth, but the Pirates picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Thompson doubled to right-center, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on an infield single by Cavalier.

That would be enough for Tiner, who retired six of the final seven batters she faced to pick up her seventh win of the season. She allowed three runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings.

Coast will return to Orange Empire Conference action on Wednesday against Golden West, beginning at 3 p.m.
