Pirates hang on to top Rustlers, 6-4

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team fought off a late Golden West rally to defeat the rival Rustlers, 6-4, on Wednesday at the OCC Softball Complex.

The Pirates (3-3) used a solo home run by Katie Kendrick to erase an early 1-0 lead by the Rustlers, then widened their lead on a two-run home run by Briana Magdaleno.

Hannah Cavalier sparked the offense from the top of the order and had three hits, scored once and reached base all four times she came to the plate.

Kendrick went 2-for-3 with a double, a HR, one run and two RBI, Magdaleno went 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI and Kristin Nance went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Kellie Tiner went the distance to record the victory. She allowed four runs on nine hits with two walks and six strikeouts over seven innings.

Things got interesting in the top of the seventh. Trailing 6-2, GWC picked up a two-run single by Kiley Dunn to make it 6-4, with runners on second and third with nobody out.

But Tiner wiggled out of the jam with a foul out by Kenzie Brewster, a strikeout by Amber Hollowood and a ground out by Alyssa Stringfield.

Coast will return to action on Friday at Cypress College, beginning at 2 p.m. OCC's next home game will take place on Friday, Feb. 28 against Fullerton, also at 2 p.m.
