Pirates end home schedule with 8-1 loss to Hawks

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball wrapped up the 2014 home portion of its schedule on Monday with an 8-1 Orange Empire Conference loss to Santiago Canyon College.

The win gives the Hawks (32-5, 17-3) the Orange Empire Conference title, while the loss drops the Pirates to 9-21, 4-16.

Coast hung tough with the champs throughout the afternoon before a five-run seventh inning blew the game open for the guests.

With the score 3-0, Coast found some offensive life in the bottom of the fourth when Briana Magdaleno doubled and advanced to third on a single by Kristin Nance, who advanced to second on the play.

A fielding error by the Hawks plated Magdaleno, making it 3-1, but SCC picked up a couple of big outs on the basepaths to avoid further damage.

The brightest story of the Pirates' season has been the offensive production of Magdaleno. With one game left, the freshman infielder has been hitting the cover off the ball with a .488 batting average, 42 hits, 17 runs, 12 home runs and 47 RBI -- all in just 29 games.

Against the best of the OEC, her numbers are just as impressive -- a .439 average, 25 hits, 10 runs, seven home runs, 24 RBI.

Her 12 home runs is fourth-best in the state and she ranks in the state top 20 in RBI (10th), on-base percentage (18th, .541) and slugging percentage (7th, .944).

Monday's game also marks the final home game for a pair of Pirate sophomores -- catcher Katie Kendrick and infielder/outfielder Kristin Nance. With one game left, Kendrick is batting .400 with 36 hits, three home runs and 11 RBI, while Nance is hitting .315 with 28 hits, 24 runs, four home runs and 20 RBI.

Coast wraps up the 2014 season at Saddleback on Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m.
