Bats come alive late for Pirates in 9-5 win over Rustlers

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Katie Kendrick and Briana Magdaleno each had four hits to lead the Orange Coast College softball team to a 9-5 Orange Empire Conference win over Golden West on Friday at GWC.

Kendrick finished 4-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, while Magdaleno went 4-for-5 with one run and two RBI for the Pirates (6-12, 2-7 in OEC). Other solid offensive performances were turned in by Hannah Cavalier (2-for-3, two runs, one RBI) and Breanna Thompson (1-for-4, two runs).

Trailing 2-1 after four innings, the Pirates grabbed the lead for good in the fifth when Kendrick ripped an RBI-double to score Magdaleno and Kellie Tiner added an RBI-grounder to put OCC in front, 3-2. An error by the Rustlers (2-17, 0-9) helped plate the third run of the inning, put the Pirates ahead, 4-2.

Both teams traded runs and after the Rustlers got to within a run at 5-4, the Pirates used a four-run seventh to pad their lead. Kendrick singled to start the seventh, advanced to second on a single by Tiner, went to third on a single by Kenna Barth and scored on a bases-loaded walk by Cavalier.

Aliviah Garcia added an RBI-ground out to make it 7-4 before Magdaleno ripped an RBI-single and Kristin Nance followed with an RBI-double to make it 9-4.

That would be enough for Tiner, who went to the distance to earn the win. She allowed five runs on 10 hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Coast will host Cypress on Wednesday (3 p.m.) and Riverside on Friday (2 p.m.).
