Pirates blanked by Hawks, 2-0

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team had a long, hot afternoon on the LeBard Stadium turf on Friday afternoon as the Pirates dropped a 2-0 decision to defending Orange Empire Conference champion Santiago Canyon.

With on-the-field temperatures exceeding 100 degrees and the 2011 state runners-up on the schedule, the Pirates had plenty on their plate to overcome.

The Hawks (6-0 overall, 2-0 in OEC) overcame a strong 15 minutes by Pirates (4-2, 0-2) before finding some scoring opportunities of their own.

In the 25th minute, Bianca Frontino, last year's conference MVP, took a free kick and chipped it into the scoring area and past goalkeeper Kate O'Banion to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

It stayed 1-0 through the rest of the first half, but 13 minutes into the second half, a turnover on defense led to a scoring opportunity for the Hawks as Frontino sent a nice pass over to teammate Abieyuwa Ogiamien, who found the back of the net to extend SCC's lead to 2-0.

O'Banion notched seven saves for OCC, while Hawks' goalkeeper, Ashley Cooper earned the shutout win with five saves.

Coast will return to action on Tuesday at Riverside College, beginning at 3 p.m.
