Pirates cruise to 5-0 win over Gauchos
COSTA MESA -- The dominant play continues for the Orange Coast College women's soccer team, thanks to Friday's 5-0 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Saddleback College.
In the win, the Pirates (14-3, 10-3 in OEC) outshot the Gauchos (5-8-3, 3-7-3) 24-1 and kept the ball on the Gauchos' side of the field throughout the match.
The Pirates' scoring began when a throw-in from Anmarie Moreno bounced over a couple of different player and onto the foot of Sara Gomez, who re-directed the ball into the net in the 6th minute.
Sarah MacArthur made it 2-0 in the 24th minute when she quickly ripped a free kick over the Gauchos' defensive wall and into the net.
It stayed that way the rest of the first half. Ten minutes into the second half, a shot attempt by Gomez was deflected over to teammate Cindy Rubio and the sophomore midfielder beat the Gaucho goalkeeper to the right to make it 3-0.
The same duo hooked up again in the 61st minute to make it 4-0. This time, Gomez worked down low, then slipped a nice pass to Rubio, who one-timed her shot into the goal.
The scoring barrage ended in the 77th minute when Courtney Garrity drove down low, then fed a nice back-pass to teammate Devin Broederlow, who found the back of the net.
Kate O'Banion saw limited action, but notched a save for the shutout win.
OCC will return to action on Tuesday at Fullerton College, beginning at 3 p.m. The Pirates' next home match will be on Friday, Nov. 9 against Irvine Valley, also at 3 p.m.
