Pirates breeze past Jaguars in home opener

COSTA MESA -- With plenty of lineup options available to the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team, the Pirates were able to use a majority of them during Friday night's straight-set win over visiting Southwestern College.

All of the Pirates who were able to play, saw action on the Peterson Gym floor as the Pirates breezed past the Jaguars, 25-2, 25-17, 25-13 in a nonconference matchup.

Lahua Alama-Jordan led the Coast offense with 13 kills. Danyelle Brown and Sierra Brown each had eight kills for the Pirates (2-0), with Sierra adding six aces and Danyelle chipping in eight digs.

Setter Danielle Boyette paced the offense with 26 assists.

It was a lightning-quick opening set for the Pirates as they jumped out to a 17-0 lead behind the strong serving of Sierra Brown, who earned all six of her aces in the opening set.

With talk of an opening-set shutout rumbling through the stands, a return into the net by the Pirates gave SWC (0-5) its first point of the set. Coast closed things out by scoring eight of the next nine points.

With a different lineup on the floor for the Pirates, Southwestern managed to find a little more success as Evelyn Cruz led the way with four kills.

But the depth of the Pirates was too much for the eight-member Jaguar team to overcome.

In the second set, Coast used a 7-1 run to turn a 12-11 lead into a 19-12 advantage and eventually grabbed a two-set lead in the match.

In the third, trailing 12-11, the Pirates used some strong serves by Angelique Scarantino to score 11 straight points, giving Coast the lead for good.

OCC will return to action on Wednesday at San Bernardino Valley College, beginning at 5 p.m. The Pirates' next home match will be Wednesday, Oct. 1 against Pasadena City College, also at 5 p.m.
