Pirates swept by Chargers

COSTA MESA -- Despite a 39-dig performance by libero Carina Perez, the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team lost in three sets to visiting Cypress, 25-22, 25-21, 26-24, on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Perez's 39-dig performance, the third-highest single-match dig total in school history, was the lone highlight on a night led by the Chargers (15-2, 5-2 in Orange Empire Conference) in a matchup between two of the top teams in the state.

Sierra Brown led the sixth-ranked Pirates (11-3, 5-3) with 14 kills, while setter Danielle Boyette dished out 30 assists.

For the fifth-ranked Chargers, Mikayla Taylor led the offense with 10 kills, Lindsey Rey came up with 22 digs and Nae Bender added 32 assists.

Coast took an early 9-5 lead in the opening set before five straight points by Cypress gave the guests a 10-9 lead. It stayed close throughout the first set before the Chargers broke a 20-20 tie with a 5-2 run to close the set out.

Cypress continued strong in the second set, jumped out to a 14-5 lead and never looked back.

In the third set, the Pirates picked up their game and used 6-0 run late to take a 22-18 advantage. Coast looked ready to push the match into a fourth set with a 23-19 lead, but Cypress used a pair of quick kills by Bender and a kill by Taylor to highlight a 7-1 run to slip past Coast in the final set.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against Santa Ana, beginning at 6 p.m.
