Hecht leads Pirates past Dons

COSTA MESA -- The strong overall play of Kerrigan Hecht highlighted a solid performance by the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team in Friday night's 25-18, 25-8, 25-22 Orange Empire Conference over Santa Ana on Friday night.

Hecht, a 5-foot-10 middle blocker from Los Osos HS, led the Pirates (12-3, 6-3 in OEC) with 13 kills and was a force up front. Sierra Brown and Kasse-Ann Dela Cruz each notched 10 digs, while setter Danielle Boyette dished out 25 assists.

Esther Arroyo had seven kills to lead the Dons (4-12, 1-8).

Both teams traded blows early, with Coast holding an 11-10 lead in the opening set. From there, Coast used a 7-1 run to pull away from the pesky Dons, with Hecht collecting a kill and two winners off of errant SAC passing attempts.

In the second set, it was ALL Pirates as they jumped out to an 11-0 lead and led by as many as 19-1 before the Dons could get any offense going. Danyelle Brown had a pair of kills during the lopsided second set, as did Hecht and Alexa Herrera.

Santa Ana regrouped for the third set and led 12-7 early and pushed the Pirates all the way to the end. With the set tied at 21, a Herrera kill and a long SAC return put Coast up 23-21. The Dons got back to within a point at 23-22 before a Hecht kill and a Dons hitting error ended the match.

Coast will return to action on Wednesday at Fullerton College, beginning at 6 p.m. OCC next home match will be on Friday against rival Golden West, beginning at 7 p.m.
