Pirates fall to El Camino in season opener

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team dropped its 2017 season opener to visiting El Camino, 25-18, 25-12, 25-10, on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Coming out against one of the top teams in the region, the Pirates had trouble matching the power from the Warriors.

Hannah Del Barto had five kills for the Pirates, while Devyn Holland dished out 17 assists and Rylee Adair notched 15 digs.

For the Warriors, Aiko Waters had 13 kills, while Jaylin Motley added 11. Sarah Dyer paced the ECC offense with 22 assists, while Jossie Tomita had 17 digs.

El Camino used a series of big runs to take control of each set. In the opener, ECC used a 9-1 outburst to break away from a 3-3 tie.

Coast regrouped and used a series of Warrior errors to get to within six at 16-10, but the Pirates never got any closer as El Camino rode the right arm of Motley (five first-set kills) to grab the opening set.

OCC grabbed the opening point of the second set before ECC used a 12-2 run to grab the lead for good. Waters (four kills) and Motley (three kills, two aces) sparked the outburst and the Pirates quickly trailed 0-2 in the match.

Coast trailed 3-2 in the third set before ECC again turned on the jets and outscored the Pirates 12-5 and never trailed the rest of the way.

The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday to host Glendale, Rio Hondo and College of the Desert in a four-way quad, beginning at 2 p.m.
