Pirates open conference play with four-set win over Hawks

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team picked up a four-set win over visiting Santiago Canyon on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym to kick off Orange Empire Conference play.

Devyn Holland had 11 kills, while Alabelle Pilimai added eight kills to lead Coast (9-1, 1-0 in OEC) to a 25-14, 25-13, 23-25, 25-16 win over the pesky Hawks (3-5, 0-2).

Showing her all-around ability, Holland was also led the way with 20 assists, while Riley Adair came up with 25 digs and five aces.

For the Hawks, Riley Hausner led the way with 13 kills.

It looked like smooth sailing for the Pirates during the first two sets as they came out firing on all cylinders against SCC. In the opening set, Coast led 13-11 before going on a 7-1 run to pull away from the Hawks.

In the second set, it was more of the same as OCC led 15-11 before turning on the jets and ending the set with a 10-2 run to grab a comfortable two-set lead.

Coast led 16-10 in the third set, forcing SCC into a timeout, but from there, the Hawks used three straight 3-1 mini-runs to even the score at 19.

OCC answered back and led 21-20 before the Hawks ripped off four straight points and eventually took the third set.

SCC again hung tough in the fourth set and trailed by just three points (17-14) before a long serve, a Pilimai kill and an ace by Holland (OCC had 15 aces during the match) gave Coast a six-point lead and were never threatened the rest of the night.

The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Cypress, beginning at 6 p.m.
