Pirates blank L.A. Mission in season opener

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team opened the 2019 season on the right foot, shutting out visiting L.A. Mission College, 4-0, on Saturday at the OCC Softball Complex.

Sophomore righty Jordyn East went the distance for the Pirates, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out 12. The Eagles managed to load the bases in the top of the third and top of the fourth, but East wiggled out of danger on both occasions. Showing no signs of slowing down, East mowed down the side in the top of the seventh, striking out the final two batters of the game.

Shawna Aguerrebere gave East more than enough offensive support, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI for the Pirates. Madison Taylor added two hits (both doubles) and scored twice, while Brianna Lopez added an RBI-double of her own.

In the bottom of the second inning, the first two OCC batters were retired before Janae Gomez reached on a throwing error by Eagles' shortstop Gysselle Soto. Taylor followed with a double down the left-field line and Aguerrebere followed with a two-run single to center, putting Coast up, 2-0.

One inning later, Jessica Scotty reached first on a walk and quickly came around to score on an RBI-double by Lopez, putting the Pirates up, 3-0.

The final run of the afternoon came in the bottom of the fourth when Taylor doubled to right-center and scored on an RBI-double to left-center by Aguerrebere.

East did a solid job of holding down the top of the LAMC lineup as the first four hitters in the Eagles' lineup went a combined 1-for-13 with eight strikeouts.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday at Rio Hondo College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home game will take place on Friday against Southwestern at 11 a.m. and San Diego City at 2 p.m.
