Big first inning propels Pirates past Wolverines

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team scored 11 runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 15-4, five-inning win over visiting San Bernardino Valley on Wednesday at the OCC Softball Complex.
Liana Castro went 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and three RBI for the Pirates (4-0), while Madison LeClaire added three hits, two run and two RBI and Janae Gomez contributed two hits, two runs and two RBI.
After the Wolverines (0-7) scored a run in the top of the first, Gomez tripled to lead off the bottom of the first, then, scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1. Ten hits, 10 runs and two errors later, the Pirates ended the frame with an 11-1 advantage as Coast sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning.
OCC tacked on a solo run in the second on an RBI-single off the bat of Blake Hesla, which scored Taryn Nadeu to make it 12-1. A solo home run by Castro and an RBI-double by Sarah Ramirez highlighted a three-run third inning for the Pirates to close out their scoring.
SBVC tacked on three late runs with two outs in the top of the fifth, but the Pirates still managed to end the game on the mercy rule just one out later.
Ramirez picked up the win in relief for the Pirates, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Starter Bronwyn Jarvis allowed an unearned run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts over the first two frames.
Coast will return to action on Friday at El Camino, beginning at 10 a.m. OCC's next home game will take place on Monday against San Diego City, beginning at 3 p.m.
