Pirates right the ship, top Long Beach in extras

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team snapped a three-game losing skid in dramatic, comeback fashion, topping visiting Long Beach City College, 6-5 in eight innings on Monday at the OCC Softball Complex.

The Pirates (12-4) needed extras after the Vikings (12-7) tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh and needed a dramatic comeback after LBCC jumped ahead, 5-3, in the top of the eighth.

But a comeback was exactly what the Pirates accomplished as a pair of costly Viking errors helped pave the way for the victory. After LBCC grabbed a 5-3 lead in the eighth, Coast had runners on first and third with nobody out when Madison Taylor laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by the Long Beach first baseman, allowing both runners to score, tying the game at 5.

After a Blake Hesla sacrifice bunt moved Taylor to third, Shawna Aguerrebere hit a grounder to the LBCC shortstop, who misplayed it and allowed Taylor to score the winning run for the Pirates.

Taylor finished 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI for OCC, while Janae Gomez had a double and three runs scored. Starter Bronwyn Jarvis allowed only three earned runs (five total) over 7 1/3 innings before Sarah Ramirez (6-0) picked up the win in relief. LBCC's Brittney Runyon (2-1) picked up the hard-luck loss, allowing three earned runs (six total) on eight hits over 7 1/3 innings.

Coast will return to action on Wednesday at Cypress College, beginning at 3 p.m.
