Pirates survive and snap losing skid with 6-5 win over Falcons

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team saw its nine-game losing skid come to an end with a 6-5 nonconference win over visiting Cerritos College on Saturday at the OCC Softball Complex.

Joanna Michaels went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, including a two-run home run for the Pirates (16-14), while Madison LeClaire went 2-for-3 and Sarah Ramirez added a hit and two RBI.

Bronwyn Jarvis pitched a complete game to pick up the win for OCC, allowing just four earned runs over seven innings with five strikeouts.

The Pirates grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Janae Gomez led off with a single in the first, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Scotty, went to third on a single by Madison Taylor and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ramirez.

Coast made it 2-0 in the third when a two-out error by Cerritos put Taylor on second base and Ramirez followed up with an RBI-single to left-center.

Cerritos (13-16) managed to tie the game at 2 in the top of the fourth, but the Pirates quickly got those two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. With Shawna Aguerrebere at third and Michaels at first, the Pirates pulled off a double steal, which scored Aguerrebere and put OCC back on top, 3-2. A Cerritos fielding error plated OCC's second run of the inning and put the Pirates back up by two at 4-2.

LeClaire led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to right and two batters later, Michaels ripped a two-run home run down the right-field line to make it 6-2.

It turns out the Pirates would need every one of those six runs because in the bottom of the seventh, the Falcons used a walk, a single and a pair of doubles to score three runs to trim OCC's lead to 6-5. But, with the tying run on second and two outs, Jarvis coaxed a harmless fly to Gomez at shortstop to end the game.

The Pirates will return to action on Monday at home against Compton College, beginning at 3 p.m.
