Pirates cruise to 9-1, 5-inning win over rival Rustlers

COSTA MESA -- This time, there was no late-inning drama required as the Orange Coast College softball team rolled past rival Golden West, 9-1, in five innings on Friday at the OCC Softball Complex.

Friday's win was a much easier result to achieve than the first time the Pirates and Rustlers played, back on Feb. 20. In that matchup, the game was tied at 3 heading into the final inning before the Pirates pulled away with an 8-3 triumph.

In Game 2 of this three-game season series, the Pirates fell behind in the top of the first, 1-0, only to respond with six in the bottom of the frame and never looked back.

In that opening inning, Brooklyn led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a single by Jessica Scotty and scored on a GWC throwing error to tie the game at 1.

A pair of walks loaded the bases and Janae Gomez followed suit with a run-scoring free pass, scoring Scotty and putting Coast ahead for good.

Madison Taylor followed with a two-run double to right-center before a run-scoring wild pitch and an RBI-grounder by Cora Tyo capped off the six-run, nine-batter opening inning.

It stayed 6-1 until the fourth, when the Pirates tacked on three more. Joanna Michaels and Taryn Nadeu each singled and Liana Castro walked to load the bases with nobody out.

Sarah Ramirez came up and promptly unloaded the bases with a three-run double to right-center to put Coast up, 9-1.

OCC pitcher Jordyn East (5-4) overcame a shaky first inning and settled down to go the distance, allowing one unearned run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Pirates will return to action on Monday at Saddleback College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home game will take place on Tuesday against Santa Barbara City College, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
