Pirates make quick work of Vaqueros with 12-0, five-inning win

COSTA MESA -- After a 1-4 mini-slump, the Orange Coast College softball team has bounced right back with three straight convincing wins, including Tuesday's 12-0, five-inning victory over visiting Santa Barbara City College.
The Pirates (15-5) continue to turn heads around the state as one of the most improved teams in 2019. After years of struggle, the program is now in the right hands of head coach Jodie Kiaha and the hard work is paying off for the Pirates, who were ranked No. 8 in Southern California in the most recent state and regional polls.
On Tuesday, Coast took advantage of seven first-inning walks and scored six times to blow the game open right away. It stayed 6-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the Coast bats came to life.
An RBI-double Madison Taylor, an RBI-single by Briana Lopez and an RBI-single by Brooklyn Pack helped highlight OCC's second six-run frame and from there, pitcher Jordyn East (5-4) kept the Vaqueros off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
After Bronwyn Jarvis pitched two solid innings to start (no runs, no hits, one walk, two strikeouts), East threw the final three frames, allowing just two hits with a walk and six strikeouts to pick up the win.
Shawna Aguerrebere went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, while Taylor added two hits, two runs and an RBI and Lopez notched a hit, scored twice and drove in two runs.
OCC returns to action on Wednesday at Riverside City College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home game will take place on Tuesday against Santa Ana College, also at 3 p.m.
