Pirates' season ends with loss to Cerritos

COSTA MESA -- In a game that was 25 years in the making, the Orange Coast College softball team saw its postseason come to an end on Tuesday at the OCC Softball Complex with an 11-2 loss to Cerritos College in the play-in round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

Coast (20-21) in the postseason for the first time since 1994, battled the Falcons (21-19) close for the first four innings before some self-inflicted errors led to a big eight-run fifth for the guests.

Cerritos jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Pirates battled back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2. Cora Tyo started things with a single to left, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Blake Hesla and went to third on a single by Joanna Michaels.

Jessica Scotty followed up with a run-scoring grounder to third which plated Tyo and moved Michaels to second. Madison Taylor followed with an RBI-single to right to score Michaels and bring the Pirates to within a run.

But three OCC errors and some key hits by the Falcons blew the game open in an 12-batter, eight-run, top of the fifth inning, putting the guests up 11-2.

Skyler Swearingen picked up the win for Cerritos (9-12), allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. The heart of the Falcons' order -- Tena Spoolstra, Haley Davis and Kayla Hernandez -- combined for six hits, three runs and four RBI, while Victoria Media added a two-run home run.

Despite the tough loss, it was still a memorable day as Coast showed the softball world that the program is heading in the right direction and a 20-win season and a postseason berth is just the beginning for what the future holds for the Pirates.
