Pirates' singles the key to 5-4 win at Riverside
RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College women's tennis team picked up four wins in singles and turned that strong start into a hard-fought 5-4 Orange Empire Conference win at Riverside City College on Tuesday.
The Pirates (7-1, 1-1 in OEC) notched four straight-set wins over the Tigers (5-3, 1-1), but two of the matches went right down to the wire. At No. 2, Karen Trinh, outlasted RCC's Gaby Ante, 7-5, 6-4, while at No. 4, JoAnn Taylor needed a first-set tiebreaker (9-7) to top RCC opponent Sam Moreto, 7-6, 6-4.
At No. 1, Clarisa Calling continued her dominant play with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Hana Papaco and at No. 3, Cecilia Arzaga blanked Ellia Rosado, 6-0, 6-0.
With a 4-2 lead heading into doubles, Coast needed just one win and quickly picked that up as Colling and Trinh defeated Papaco and Rosado, 8-2.
The Pirates will return to action on Thursday at home against Saddleback, beginning at 2 p.m.
