Pirates return the favor on Gauchos with 5-4 win

MISSION VIEJO -- The Orange Coast College women's tennis team came up with a HUGE 5-4 win over host Saddleback College on Tuesday afternoon in a crucial Orange Empire Conference matchup.

The win by the Pirates (11-2, 4-2 in OEC) pulls them ahead of the Gauchos (7-4, 3-2) for third place in the conference standings, trailing Irvine Valley (8-1, 5-1) by one game and Riverside (9-3, 4-1) by a half-game.

Karen Trinh (6-2, 7-5), Clarisa Colling (6-2, 6-3) and Samantha Newhall (6-2, 6-0) each picked up straight-set wins in singles play, but the biggest win came at No. 3 singles as JoAnn Taylor overcame a first-set loss to top Saddleback's Joanna Colin, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, putting OCC up 4-2.

In doubles, the team of Taylor and Newhall pulled out an 8-3 win to secure the team victory for the Pirates.

The big matches continue for the Pirates as they host first-place IVC on Thursday, beginning at 2 p.m.
