Pirates edge Lasers to draw even atop OEC standings

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's tennis team took care of business on Thursday and topped visiting Irvine Valley College, 5-4, to draw even with the Lasers for first place in the Orange Empire Conference.

The Pirates (12-2, 5-2 in OEC) picked up straight-set wins by Karen Trinh (6-2, 6-2), Clarisa Colling (6-4, 6-2) and Samantha Newhall (6-1, 6-1) to stay even with the Lasers.

In doubles, the teams of Colling/Trinh (8-0) and Newhall/JoAnn Taylor (8-4) helped give the Pirates the overall victory against the Lasers (8-2, 5-2).

Irvine Valley had given the Pirates one of their two losses this year, dropping a 6-3 decision on Feb. 23 at IVC.

Coast returns to action on Tuesday at home against Riverside City College, beginning at 2 p.m.
