Pirates win sixth straight with 5-4 triumph over Tigers

COSTA MESA -- In a battle between two of the top teams in the Orange Empire Conference, the Orange Coast College women's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 win over visiting Riverside City College on Tuesday afternoon.

The win pushes the Pirates (13-2, 6-2 in OEC) ahead by one match over the Tigers (11-5, 6-3) in the loss column and keeps the Pirates tied with first-place Irvine Valley (10-3, 7-2). Coast has two matches remaining -- at Cypress on Tuesday (2 p.m.) and at home against Fullerton on Thursday (2 p.m.). Riverside hosts IVC on Tuesday with both teams off on Thursday.

If the Pirates win their final two matches and Riverside tops the Lasers, OCC will be the conference champion. If IVC were to win, the Lasers and Pirates would be co-champions.

In Tuesday's win, The top four singles players for Coast came through with straight set wins, including Clarisa Colling (6-2, 6-0), Karen Trinh (6-3, 6-3), Cecilia Arzaga (6-1, 6-2) and JoAnn Taylor (7-5, 6-4).

The Tigers picked up wins at No. 5 and 6 singles, but OCC picked up the team win, thanks to an 8-3 doubles win by the team of Colling and Trinh.
