Late goal dooms Pirates in home opener

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team hung tough with one of the top teams in Southern California, but a late goal proved to be the difference in a 2-1 nonconference loss against visiting Chaffey College on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

The Panthers (3-0) took a 1-0 lead when a Panther player was pulled down inside the Pirate penalty area, giving the guests an penalty kick opportunity. Chaffey midfielder Ana Gonzalez stepped up and ripped a shot into the lower-right corner of the goal, putting the Panthers up, 1-0.

Coast responded four minutes later when a corner kick was batted around in front of the Chaffey goal before Manuela Ramirez knocked a pass to Samantha Lombardo, who found the back of the net to tie things up at a goal apiece.

Despite several decent looks, the Pirates could not find that all-important second goal. Early in the second half and deflection rang off of the crossbar and shot straight down onto, but not behind, the goal line, keeping the match tied up.

Finally, in the 79th minute, Chaffey's Anna Pinedo fed a pass to Kindal Cubak, who took one dribble and ripped a shot into the upper-right corner of the net to give the Panthers the lead for good.

Coast will return to action on Wednesday at home against Rio Hondo, beginning at 2 p.m.
