Pirates, Roadrunners play to scoreless draw

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team controlled most of Wednesday's rain-soaked matchup with visiting Rio Hondo, but in the end, the Pirates had to settle for a 0-0 tie in a nonconference matchup played at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Coast (1-2-1) held the Roadrunners (1-0-2) to just three shots the entire afternoon, but the Pirates couldn't convert their scoring opportunities and settled for the draw.

In fact, it was Rio Hondo with the best scoring chance of the match as Erika Lizarraga ripped a free kick towards the OCC goal in stoppage time, but the shot rang off of the crossbar.

Coast outshot RHC 9-3, but the Roadrunner goalie tandem of Christina Holguin (one save in the first half), and Elizabeth Miramontes (four saves in the second half) kept the hosts off of the scoreboard.

Midway through the second half, the relentless heat wave that has plagued the area, gave way to an unexpected downpour, cooling things off a bit, but making scoring that much more difficult.

OCC netminder Odalis Elias notched two saves to preserve the shutout.

Coast will return to action on Tuesday at Saddleback College, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Pirates' Orange Empire Conference opener. OCC's next home match will be on Friday, Sept. 25 against Golden West, beginning at 3 p.m.
