Haney scores twice to lead Pirates past IVC, 2-1

COSTA MESA -- Cori Haney had two goals in a three-minute span to lead the Orange Coast College women's soccer team to a 2-1 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Irvine Valley on Friday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Haney's goals were assisted by Ana Villanueva and Sydnee Busby as the Pirates (9-5-3, 8-3-2) fought off some pre-Halloween distractions to pick up the win over the Lasers (5-9-2, 3-7-2).

After an uneventful first half of play, things finally swayed over to OCC's favor as a loose ball in the IVC scoring area was corralled by Villanueva, who fed a nice touch-pass to Haney and the sophomore midfielder didn't miss, giving Coast a 1-0 advantage in the 63rd minute.

In the 66th minute a turnover by the Lasers led to an advantage by the Pirates as Busby found a wide-open Haney to the left and she again made no mistake as she put OCC up, 2-0.

It stayed that way until the 86th minute, when a defensive breakdown led to a 2-on-1 for IVC as Alexandra Benedict took a pass from Brenda Chopin and scored, to bring the Lasers back to within a goal with just a few minutes remaining in the contest.

But Coast would not led IVC get any further shots on the goal the rest of the match. OCC netminder Odalis Elias finished with two saves, while Lasers' goalkeeper Rebecca Trejo recorded four.

The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's final regular season home match will be on Friday, Nov. 13 against Norco, also at 3 p.m.
