Pirates split a pair at Ventura Tournament

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team opened the 2015 season with a split in last weekend's action at the Ventura College Tournament, losing to Long Beach City College, 3-2, before topping West Valley College, 3-1.

The opener was a back-and-forth matchup as both teams traded a combined four goals in the first half. Freshman midfielder Emily Malec notched a pair of goals eight minutes apart for the Pirates, with assists earned by Nicole Lombardo and Jessica Bracken.

But the Vikings took advantage of a costly Pirate turnover an scored the game-winner in the final 15 minutes to seal the win.

Against West Valley, Coast again scored early as Sydnee Busby found the back of the net off an assist by Malec in the 15th minute.

With the game tied at 1, Coast grabbed the lead for good when Nicole Rodriguez fed a nice pass to Cori Haney, who scored to put the Pirates ahead, 2-1 in the 70th minute.

Just 10 minutes later, Jessica Bracken made it 3-1 with a goal off of an assist by Emma Gomez.

OCC netminder Odalis Elias played all 180 minutes for the Pirates and notched a combined five saves in the split.

The Pirates will play their home opener on Friday at 2 p.m. against Chaffey College.
