Pirates open season with runner-up finish at MSJC tourney

MT. SAN JACINTO -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team opened the 2013 season at the Mt. San Jacinto College tournament and finished runner-up in the eight-team event this past weekend.

Coast (2-1) opened with an 85-48 win over Victor Valley on Friday and followed that up with a 68-42 win against Antelope Valley on Saturday before falling the tourney title game to Chaffey, 74-71 in overtime on Sunday.

In the win over Antelope Valley, Dayanara Armenta led the way with 16 points, while Chanelle DiCroce added 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Jasmine Matar contributed 11 points, while Kelsey Dalton added 10 points and five rebounds off of the bench.

Much like the win over Victor Valley, the Pirates jumped out to an early double-digit lead and never relinquished their comfortable advantage the rest of the game.

In the tourney title game against Chaffey, both teams battled back and forth. Chaffey's Mary Windom put the Panthers out in front 65-62 courtesy of a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left in regulation. But, Armenta, who scored 15 in the title game, drained a trey of her own with 11 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

But the Pirates were held to one field goal and four made free throws in the extra session and the Panthers pulled out the victory.

Armenta (55 tournament points) and DiCroce (31 points, 34 rebounds) were each named to the All-Tournament Team for the Pirates.

OCC returns to action on Thursday in the Coast Crossover against Rio Hondo, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Pirates will wrap up the Crossover on Friday against El Camino, also at 7:30 p.m.
