Armenta, Pirates topple Chargers, 67-55

CYPRESS -- Dayanara Armenta had a game-high 19 points to lead the Orange Coast College women's basketball team to a 67-55 Orange Empire Conference win over Cypress College on Friday night.

Armenta was 7-of-16 from the floor, including three 3-pointers for the Pirates (15-9, 6-2 in the OEC). Chanelle DiCroce added 15 points, while Jasmine Matar added 12 and Raechelle Davis chipped in 11.

For the Chargers, (14-12, 5-4), Haley Gorman led the way with 14 points, while Ruby Nichols came off the bench to contribute 10 points and six rebounds.

The win gives Coast some breathing room for second place in the OEC standings, a game-and-a-half ahead of Cypress and two games ahead of Santa Ana. OCC trails first-place Saddleback by one game heading into their all-important matchup on Tuesday at Saddleback College, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Coast, which led by four late in the first half (27-23), went on a 16-4 run to lead 43-27 with 16 minutes remaining in the game. Armenta accounted for nine of those points, while Davis added four during that run.

The lead grew to as many as 16 (47-31) before the Chargers would go on a run of their own and trim the deficit down to eight at 50-42 with 8:15 left.

But the Pirates would not let Cypress get any closer, thanks to success at the free-throw line, where OCC went 12-of-14 down the stretch.

Following Tuesday night's match with the Gauchos, Coast will return home for Coaches vs. Cancer Night against Santa Ana on Thursday night, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
