Pirates fall to Ventura in SoCal Regionals

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team saw its up-and-down 2013-14 season come to an end on Wednesday night as the ninth-seeded Pirates fell to top-seeded Ventura, 103-63, in the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs.

"I think the final score was more of an indication of how well Ventura played against us," OCC head coach Mike Thornton said. "I think that was the best any team has ever played against us."

The host Pirates (29-3) jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back. Ventura held a 56-31 lead at the half and the 103 points scored on the visiting Pirates (19-11) was the second-most in OCC school history (104 vs. Golden West on Jan. 3, 1991).

Chanelle DiCroce led the offense with 16 points, while Jasmine Matar added 15 and Raechelle Davis chipped in 14.

Ventura, which shot an eye-popping 54.5% from the floor, was led by Cynthia Hernandez with 28 points, Brooke Dixon added 22 and Adrianne Sloboh knocked in 20. Lisa Marie Sanchez had 13 first-half assists and Ventura's starting five players scored 92 of its 103 points.

"Quite honestly, they (Ventura) are playing at a level that I haven't seen a team play for a long time," Thornton said.

For the OCC Pirates, their season comes to an end after one of the more remarkable runs in program history. The team that played only 6-7 players for most of the season won 9 of its last 11 games and made a serious run at the Orange Empire Conference title.
