Pirates take third at Cuesta tourney

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball overcame injuries and pulled out a solid third-place performance at the Cuesta Invitational this past weekend at Cuesta College.

In the opener on Thursday, the Pirates (6-2) edged L.A. Pierce, 67-66. Coast used the hot outside shooting of Dayanara Armenta (4-of-9 3-pointers) and Chanelle DiCroce (4-of-5  3-pointers) to pull out the hard-fought victory. DiCroce led all scorers with 18 points and six rebounds, while Armenta added 17. Jasmine Matar tossed in 14 points and 11 rebounds, while teammate Raechelle Davis narrowly missed out on her own double-double with nine points and 14 rebounds.

In the championship semifinal against, Allan Hancock, a rough second half proved costly as the Pirates fell to the Bulldogs, 71-61.

With center Morgan Johnson on the shelf with an ankle injury, Coast battled through and still managed to push AHC all the way to the end. Caitlin Bunting led OCC with 16 points, while Armenta added 15 and Davis tossed in 13 to go along with a team-best 10 rebounds.

The ever-thinning roster continued to shrink for the Pirates in the third-place game against Butte.

Playing the second half with just five players, the Pirates fought hard and pulled out a 77-67 win.

Kelsey Dalton led the Pirates with 19 points, while Matar, Davis and Kelcie Mayott each added 14. Davis continued her dominant play down low and pulled down a team-best 17 rebounds, while Matar brought down 14 of her own.

Coast will return to action on Friday at the Moorpark College Tournament.
