Pirates use strong first half to topple El Camino

COSTA MESA -- The "elite eight" of the 2013-14 Orange Coast College women's basketball team continue their strong play following a 67-49 win over El Camino on Day 2 of the Orange Coast College Crossover, played inside the Peterson Gym.

Kelsey Dalton led the Pirates (4-1) with 15 points, while Dayanara Armenta added 14 points. Chanelle DiCroce and Caitlin Bunting combined for 16 points and 23 rebounds, while Jasmine Matar and Raechelle Davis each added eight points.

Faith Matsuda led the Warriors (4-2) with 11 points, but the OCC defense held the opposition to a frosty 27.7 percent from the floor (18-of-65).

Leading 11-8 midway through the first half, Coast found another offensive gear and outscored the Warriors 22-12 over the final 10 minutes, giving the hosts a 33-20 lead at the half.

Despite a couple of mini-runs by El Camino, OCC's lead never fell below double digits the rest of the night, giving Coast a 2-0 sweep in the Crossover event.

True to form, the Warriors came out shooting from long range and managed to hit eight 3-pointers on the night, but OCC nearly matched them and connected on seven treys, led by four from Dalton.

OCC will return to tournament play on the road, starting on December 5 at the Cuesta Tournament. Coast will return to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday, Dec. 18 against Chaffey at 5:30 in the Erin Tomlinson Coast Christmas Classic.
