Armenta's 20 points leads Pirates past Hornets

FULLERTON -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team used a strong first half to topple host Fullerton College, 78-66, on Friday night in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

Dayanara Armenta paced OCC's offense with 20 points, while Jasmine Matar added 19 points, five rebounds and seven steals and Raechelle Davis chipped in 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Kelsey Dalton came off of the bench for Coast (12-8, 3-2 in OEC) and provided a lift with 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

For the Hornets (5-15, 1-4), Noelle Cobb led the way with 25 points, while Carla Castaneda added 16 points. The rest of the team was held to just 9-of-43 shooting (20.9 percent).

Coast trailed early, 11-4, before taking control of the things with a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 14-11 lead -- a lead the Pirates would not lose the rest of the way.

Matar led the way with 13 first-half points and the Pirates took a 41-31 lead into halftime.

Fullerton tried to get back into the contest early in the second half and cut OCC's lead down to three at 42-39, but the Pirates responded with a 11-2 run of their own to make it 53-41 with 14 minutes left.

The lead grew to as many as 20 for Coast as Armenta's 13 second-half points led the way.

OCC will return to action on Wednesday at home against Riverside City College, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
