Coast goes 1-2 at Ventura Tournament

VENTURA -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team went 1-2 at the Ventura College Tournament this past weekend. OCC lost to L.A. Valley in the opener, 69-49, then topped San Bernardino Valley, 58-43 before falling to Southwestern 49-47 in the consolation finals.

In the opener, Dayanara Armenta and Raechelle Davis each scored 12 points to lead the Pirate offense. Davis also controlled the boards and led the team with nine rebounds, while Caitlin Bunting dished out four assists.

In the consolation semis against SBVC, Coast trailed 26-22 at the half before holding the Wolverines to just 17 second-half points the rest of the way. Chanelle DiCroce played all 40 minutes for the Pirates and led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmine Matar added 16 points and seven boards, while Armenta added 11 points and three steals.

In the consolation finals agains the Jaguars, Coast struggled from downtown, hitting just 2-of-17 from 3-point range. Davis notched a double-double with a 12-point, 13-rebound performance, while DiCroce did the same, dropping in 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday, Jan. 10 when they open Orange Empire Conference action at Irvine Valley College at 7:30 p.m. Coast's next home game will be on Wednesday, Jan. 15 against Cypress, also at 7:30 p.m.
